We were working on cleaning up the ditch where the water had rushed down and brought with it lots of trees, branches and mud creating a very large dam. The kids have enjoyed playing on it through out the summer and are sad to see it go however if we don't take care of it when the next flash flood comes through we will surely lose our bridge! We have lived here since 2007 and there has now been 3 floods as well as many small flash floods coming through the ditch.
My husband tried to burn it a few times but with all the sand and dirt mixed in, it didn't burn very well. Being in the shade doesn't help either it really holds the moisture. Even with the little gas added to the pile only the top layer burned. The kids favorite part was the big BOOOOOM when the fire started. Since burning did not work, in order to start making a bigger dent in this huge dam we had to pull the big trees out with the tractor.
Around the bridge was cleaned up too. We cut down all the little trees that had grown up over the summer and gave them to the alpacas to enjoy. Boy were they happy with the green leaves and scratching themselves against the branches. We than had the damage to the bridge filled in with large rocks, now we won't have to worry about anyone getting to close to the edge! It looks so much better & safe now.
What fun we had with everyone! We took the alpacas for a nice walk in the evening and even transformed our old 4x4 swing into a tire swing. And there is more outdoor play space projects coming!
