This year we are learning about Astronomy using Apologia's: Exploring creation with Astronomy by Jeannie Fulbright. Apologia makes a wonderful notebook to go along with the textbook, however it wasn't in our budget to get three of them. I purchased one for my oldest and am making our own junior notebooks for my younger learners.

Putting the notebooks together

I used a free font called space attack from dafont.com for their names on the front of the science notebooks and the kids colored them. I also made up an alphabet page & numbers page for the kids using this font. They loved  it. To add more to the front of the notebook I searched Google, I went with a flying boy and flying girl. For our copy work pages I used this site. I am also using the notebook pages available through apologia, you need to use the password located in the textbook to access these.

We recently started our family science unit. We are using Apologia's: Exploring creation with Astronomy by Jeannie Fulbright. We love it so far! It's easy to read aloud to the kids and really captures their attention. The textbook has lots of pictures keeping all ages interested.

Lesson 1:  What is Astronomy?

We added hands on activities and crafts  to go along with our curriculum....
Edible Solar System
Our Edible Solar systems were a lot of fun and very yummy ;) We listened to a song with the planets orders well creating these to help introduce them to the names and orders of the planets.

The kids created their glittery galaxies we listened to Indescribable by Chris Tomlin. Such a powerful song and this video has lots of galaxy images to look at. I am planning on having the kids watch the Indescribable video by Louie Gigalo again since its been a few years since we watched it. It is very moving!
The kids also enjoyed watching The Magic School Bus- Lost in Space

My oldest was the teacher for the solar system project. She explained the project to the younger kids and helped them measure the balloons according to the table in the book. This project gives the kids a visual of the difference sizes of the planets in comparison to each other. Everyone had a lot of fun with this project.
