Each pocket has a scripture verse, a fun activity and this year we add a daily joke....the kids love telling jokes so they are enjoying this. We use our little candy cane reindeer to mark which day it is, he works nicely. And having the calendar up helps the kids to be able to count on their own how many days until Christmas. Which helps with the daily (sometimes constant) question of "how many days until Christmas."
Last Christmas we started a new family tradition of having an advent calendar. I had bought a large drop cloth for another project and had plenty left over for this. The fabric drop cloths are a great way to get a lot of fabric for cheap. For the pockets I used fat quarters in varies colors and designs.
